How much time do you spend inside? Probably a lot. This means that you’re more than likely sat inside a room with artificial lighting for long periods of time each day, but how much attention have you actually paid to that lighting? Probably not a lot. It’s time to stop neglecting such an important part of our everyday life, and pay some attention to the types and styles of lights we see day in, day out.
I’ve recently come across Studio Arntzen, a design light shop run by Dutch designer Paula Arntzen. Paula has the ability to innovatively mix her craft skills with her fascination for lighting design to create some amazing and really unique products. It’s really made me think about how much of a difference lighting can make in a room.
About Studio Arntzen
Paula Arntzen studied Traditional Furniture Making at the HMC in the Netherlands which allowed her to develop her craft skills and technical knowledge as a furniture maker. After studying at HMC, Paula Arntzen went on the study product design at the ArtEZ Academy of Art in the Netherlands which lead her to decide on a career as a product designer. Studio Arntzen, the design studio of Paula, was established after Paula graduated in 2009.
Paula used this studio space to create light installations for public spaces, create new products and work for clients not only from the Netherlands, but internationally. Paula the decided to complete a Masters of Arts in Design Products in London, at the Royal College or Art, graduating in 2015. Her work has been presented internationally and she has worked on collaboration projects and workshops worldwide.
The lighting in a home can really change the mood of a room, light is proven to make you feel happier, in particular natural sunlight. Recreating this in your home can not only make you happier, but also more productive. Some soft, warm lighting creates a calming, relaxing vibe, while some bright lighting can create a lively effect. It is important to get the right level of lighting in the room, but it’s even more important to choose an interesting light fixture that fits in with your room.
Lighting also adds the illusion of space, whether it’s natural or man-made. If you have a dark room, try adding some more lighting to make the space seem more open and bright. A centrally hanging light with an eye-catching design, like the styles available from Studio Arntzen, is the perfect solution to add some light, as well to create a unique room. If your room is still dark after adding a main light to space, try placing a lamp in one of the corners of the room, or you could even add some fairy lights.
